Working hours by country and year

These guides provide yearly working-hours estimates for each supported country. The estimate is based on working days (weekends and national public holidays excluded) and an 8-hour workday assumption.

Totals vary by country and year because public holidays differ. Teams use these pages for payroll, reporting, staffing planning, and capacity forecasting across multiple countries.

Why working hours vary by country

Working hours depend on business-day counts and workweek assumptions. Public holidays vary, holiday calendars change year to year, and some regions use non–Monday–Friday schedules.

For example:

  • some countries have more public holidays than others
  • some regions use Sunday–Thursday schedules
  • regional holidays can affect yearly operational capacity

These differences show up in payroll totals, staffing capacity, HR planning, delivery/SLA planning, and international operations.

How working hours are calculated

Each country/year page computes working days with HolidayDB’s business-day logic, then multiplies by an 8-hour workday assumption.

  • total calendar days
  • minus weekends
  • minus public holidays
  • multiplied by workday duration (8 hours)
  • equals yearly working hours

If you need custom weekdays or a different workday duration, use the working hours calculator or the API.

Built for both browser use and APIs

These guides are generated from the same HolidayDB APIs and logic as the calculators. Use the browser pages for quick reference, and use the APIs for automation and integration.

See the API docs or open the calculators to model specific scenarios. Related reference hubs: working days and public holidays.

Common use cases

  • payroll planning
  • staffing and workforce planning
  • contractor billing
  • HR reporting
  • operational capacity planning
  • delivery/SLA planning
  • project scheduling
  • comparing yearly work capacity between countries

Frequently asked questions

What are working hours estimates?

They are yearly totals derived from working days (weekends and public holidays excluded) multiplied by an assumed workday duration.

Do working hours exclude public holidays?

Yes. These estimates exclude national public holidays for the selected country and year.

Why do yearly working hours vary between countries?

Public holidays and business-day counts vary, and workweek assumptions can differ. Those inputs change the number of worked days in a year.

Is the calculation based on 8-hour workdays?

Yes. The guide assumes an 8-hour workday for the working-hours estimate.

Are regional holidays included?

These country/year guides focus on national rules by default. For region/subdivision holidays and custom schedules, use the working hours calculator or the API.

Can I use the same calculations via API?

Yes. HolidayDB exposes the same logic via endpoints documented in the API docs.

Which guide should I use for payroll planning?

Use working hours for time-based capacity, and cross-check working days and public holidays.
